چکیده

The helical compression spring is one of the most commonly used mechanical components. As a result, spring design is a commonly performed task in industry and would benefit from the development of flexible tools that can answer the question of what makes a spring design optimal. To address this, we develop an intelligent supporting tool using an object-oriented design framework that provides users the robustness needed to define and solve any spring design problem they require. In addition to our tool interfacing with a graphic user interface, we supplement its flexibility with analytic tools. One such tool provides global sensitivity analysis, and another provides a feasibility plot which helps the user determine if their problem has a solution or if it should be redefined. We also include a model for stress relaxation, which is a novel inclusion in the list of considerations for spring specifications. Both its unique flexibility and capability and the analytic tools we provide to support it make our tool useful in defining, solving, and analyzing optimal spring design problems.

A Computational Approach for Evaluating Helical Compression Springs

Helical compression springs are generally synthesized and evaluated by determining the maximum torsional stress, fatigue life, natural frequency, and/or load loss due to stress relaxation. To this end, researchers have developed finite element analysis (FEA) modeling methods to simulate the design performance of helical compression springs. The intent of this paper was to make a useful contribu...

Modeling and Simulation of a Vehicle Suspension with Variable Damping versus the Excitation Frequency

In this work, three types of vehicle suspensions were considered and modeled as follows: oil damper mounted in parallel with a compression helical spring, for which a Kelvin-Voigt model, consisted of a dashpot and an elastic element connected in parallel is considered; colloidal damper without attached compression helical spring, for which a Maxwell model, consisted of a dashpot and an elastic ...

Gordon University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida, USA ABSTRACT Helical compression springs are commonly used devices capable of storing kinetic energy. Typical applications vary in simplicity, ranging from low stress amplitudes and in favorable environments, e.g. ball point pen spring at room temperature, to mill...

Wave Motion and Stop-Bands in Pipes with Helical Characteristics Using Wave Finite Element Analysis

Pipes are widely used in many industrial and mechanical applications and devices. Although there are many different constructions according to the specific application and device, these can show helical pattern, such as spiral pipes, wire-reinforced pipes/shells, spring-suspension, and so on. Theoretical modelling of wave propagation provides a prediction about the dynamic behavior, and it is f...

Optimal Synthesis of a Cascade Refrigeration System of LNG Through MINLP Model for Pure Refrigerant Cycles

liquefied natural gas (LNG) is the most economical way of transporting natural gas (NG) over long distances. Liquefaction of NG by using vapor compression refrigeration system requires high operating and capital cost. Due to lack of systematic design methods for multistage refrigeration cycles, the conventional approaches of determining optimal cycle configuration are mostly based on trial-an...
